NIGHT MODE is the first of two new releases from the Volutus record label, recorded in the summer of 2022 during the label’s residency at Maintenant in Marfa Texas.

NIGHT MODE captures the evening vibes inspired during the residency, an all-night desert rave that starts out at a temperate sunset before skirting off-road, revving up to frenetic pulses and synth freakouts as the clear dark sky engulfs the Maintenant landscape in west Texas. Night Mode lives as something of a contrast to the forthcoming DAY MODE, which will explore the more sparse and ambient recordings made during the Volutus residency.

The stay in Marfa assembled the boys inside the barn at Maintenant alongside sculptures from artist Rob Mazurek’s then-recent Watershed installation, augmented by Carsello helming visuals to project onto the sculptures and crew as they worked. Synching their tables of gear together to operate on the same MIDI tempo clock, the Volutus gang recorded every day and night for a week, culminating in an open studio performance where attendees also got to preview a selection of some of the recorded material from Volutus' time.

The core of Volutus is TJ Tambellini (Topian Xome), Rob Goerke (Quiet Eye), Johnny Caluya (JC Tascam), Zaid Maxwell (Oscillator Bug), Joe Carsello (Carsayo) and Steve Reidell. Tambellini, Goerke and Caluya all played together in Trouble In Mind Records’ krauty psych outfit VERMA; Reidell and Maxwell in experimental rock band SHAPERS, Carsello and Maxwell in post-punk lunatics LASERS & FAST & SHIT, Reidell as touring bassman for BLACK MOTH SUPER RAINBOW and TOBACCO — and that was all before they formed Volutus as a new home for side projects and audio experiments. Since then, in addition to their solo works, the members have cross-pollinated frequently for the label’s ongoing string of releases, but NIGHT MODE marks the first recording made by the entire squad together in the same place. Videographer and fellow musician Sam Grant contributes to some of the pieces within, and the voices of Maintenant founders Jeff Matheis and Sabrina Lejeanvre can be heard throughout the four movements.
